Calif. Family Values Legislator: Gay Bar, DUI, and Arrested!

Hypocrisy is a bitch, ain’t it?
Well, the latest perpetrator is in California’s State Senate. His name is Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield). It seems that Roy thought the Latin drag queen beauty contest at a Sacramento gay bar would be fun. So, he dropped in to see what they were up to on Tuesday night. Well, Roy had a GREAT time and got really drunk! We’re talking pissy-drunk then he hopped in his state-issued vehicle with a man. He was caught swerving in the car near the State Capitol building and was pulled over and arrested for DUI. It has been reported that his blood alcohol level was 0.14, well above the 0.08 legal limit.
You would think that this is an open/shut classic case of DUI with someone who happens to be gay. Umm .. no. Ashburn is a staunch Republican who represents a very conservative area of California in the state Senate. He organized a “Traditional Family Values” rally in 2005 to support a ban against same-sex marriage. His positions are widely-known in the state as unfriendly to gays.
Yet, the openly-gay mayor of West Sacramento has confirmed that he’s seen Ashburn out on the town in several gay hangouts. Even Ashburn’s own hometown newspaper, The Bakersfield Californian, has questioned Ashburn’s sexuality twice along with another GLBT publication. Wow!
I’m definitely not playing morality police about who rolls around with Ashburn in his Sleep Number bed. My issue is simple. First, DUI in a state vehicle as a lawmaker is just the apex of stupidity. You make the laws, then throw them out the window? Second, how is he visiting gay bars in Sacramento, but carrying the anti-gay torch in Bakersfield? Did he not think the INTERNET would connect the two cities that are only 4 hours apart?? It’s mind-blowing to me, but he has accepted responsibility and is preparing for whatever his punishment shall be.
In the interim, Ashburn has taken a personal leave from his job.
