Death Threats For Members of Congress?!?!

| On 24, Mar 2010

The office of Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) was one of the alleged targets of violence this past weekend.

Ok, this has been a very heated healthcare debate with passionate arguments from both sides of the fence.  But, we have OFFICIALLY crossed the line when members of Congress are receiving death threats for their votes in favor of the healthcare legislation on Sunday.

Let me be clear.  I don’t support death threats toward any member of Congress regardless of party affiliation. Though threats are VERY serious, the reason for the threats is not.  Healthcare?!  Someone would actually take their time and send hate messages to Congress over legislation?  People must really feel powerless. There are many more effective ways to get involved with government, even when sharing your viewpoint with an opposing party.  Have these crazies lost their damn minds?!

So far, at least 10 members of Congress have been targeted with threats. House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer (D-MD), spoke out against the threats after gathering information from the Capitol Police.  To make matters worse, there are allegations that the local offices of Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) were vandalized this past weekend.  The brother of Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA) had the gas line to his home severed over the weekend.  The address was posted online was supposedly Tom’s, but it was actually his brother Bo’s.   The FBI is currently investigating the threats against all of the members.

The Democratic leadership has asked that protection be extended to any member of Congress if they feel they need it, regardless  of party affiliation.  I hope people will wake up and grow up.  Someone has far too much time on their hands to cut gas lines to people’s homes, send threats, and vandalize buildings.  I just don’t get it at all.
