Elizabeth Edwards Succumbs to Cancer at Age 61

Here’s a bit of sad news out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina today.
Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former presidential candidate and former U.S. Senator John Edwards (D-N.C.), lost her battle with cancer today. She was 61 years old.
Mrs. Edwards rose to fame in her support of her husband’s aspirations to be both the vice president and Commander-In-Chief in 2004 and 2008, respectively. She was outspoken, smart, and genuinely interested in how her husband could fix some of America’s ills. His dreams for the White House, however, were not meant to be.
The day after the 2004 race ended, the public learned that Elizabeth had breast cancer and would soon begin treatment.
Despite her husband’s campaigns for high office, Mrs. Edwards became even more famous when it was revealed that John was having an affair and fathered a child with Rielle Hunter, a campaign photographer. John Edwards denied paternity at first, then later claimed it. All the while, Elizabeth continued to battle cancer off and on as it spread to her bones.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by three children, ages 9, 12, and 28. She and John Edwards were separated, though still close at the time of her death. The couple lost their 16-year-old son, Wade, in a car crash in 1996.
