Ex-Detroit Mayor Is Headed Back to the Slammer, Baby!

He’s the former mayor of one of the largest cities in the U.S. His mother serves in the U.S. House of Representatives. Though having been disbarred since 2008, he was an attorney for Christ’s sake. He at one point demonstrated SOME knowledge of the law and legal system.
So, tell me why Kwame Kilpatrick, former Detroit mayor, was sentenced today to 18 months to five years in prison for violating his probation through perjury. He was hiding money he should have been paying the city toward the $1 million in restitution he owed them. Is he stupid?!
Upon learning of his sentence, his employer, Compuware Corporation, fired him. Double blow. But it makes sense. Not too many people can handle the rigors of a 9 – 5 job from behind bars for YEARS at a time.
Here’s the back story quickly. Kilpatrick was the mayor of the Motor City during most of the last decade. He became romantically involved with his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty. He then lied about the affair under oath in a separate trial dealing with a police officer suing the City of Detroit. Text messages sent between the two on the city’s Skytel pagers confirmed the affair.
So, in another trial, a perjury conviction landed him a 120-day jail sentence that he served in late 2008 / early 2009. It was at that time that he was ordered by the county prosecutor to pay the $1 million in restitution to the City of Detroit and have his Michigan law license revoked. He obviously had to step down as mayor as well.
Upon his release the first time, he moved to the Dallas, Tx. area and began his $120,000/year sales job with Compuware to start life over with his family.
It was then that the judge claims Kilpatrick began funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars in supposed restitution through his family’s bank accounts and NOT back to the City of Detroit. Take his wife, for instance, she had elective surgery. They lived in a $1 million house in the suburbs. They drove expensive cars. When Kilpatrick had to explain how and why this was going on, his explanations weren’t enough. The judge amounted that to perjury and threw him back in the slammer today.
In my opinion, it’s a really sad case (for the City of Detroit) of a pompous, arrogant, and self-serving mayor who only had his intentions in mind since he took office. He has pimped and embarrassed that city and his family’s name at every turn. He was even given a second chance that a lot of people don’t get, but he blew it over some money that he owed Detroit anyway!
His fan and hate mail can now be forwarded to Michigan Department of Corrections, Inmate #702408. If he ever tries to escape, he has a tattoo of Alpha Phi Alpha (his fraternity) on his left arm and KMK (his initials) on his right arm.
The Detroit Free-Press has done an excellent job of keeping up with the mayor’s antics over the years. Check them out at freep.com for minute-by-minute updates and several back articles on the scandals.
