Ex-Felon, James Traficant, And His Wig Run For Congress
Matt | On 03, May 2010
Former Congressman and felon, James Traficant (D), is running for his old seat in Ohio’s 17th Congressional district in the Youngstown area of Northeast Ohio.
Traficant is looking to unseat Tim Ryan, a Democrat, who has held the seat since 2002. Instead of running as a Democrat, Traficant is running as an Independent, which basically keeps his name in the race through November. This will allow the general electorate to vote on him instead of just Democrats in the primary election. He would have probably been slaughtered in tomorrow’s Democratic primary in Ohio.
Traficant held his old seat from 1985-2002, nine terms in total. He was convicted of filing false tax returns, taking bribes, racketeering, and forcing staff to perform chores on his properties in Ohio and Washington, D.C. He went to prison for seven years behind this conviction and was expelled from Congress in 2002. Traficant was released from prison in September 2009.
Word has it that he is also filing paperwork to run in Ohio’s 6th district as well. It’s unclear from the Ohio Secretary of State if he’s even allowed to do that.
The long and short of it is that James Traficant may come back to haunt a Congress near you … wiggy and all!
