HCR BREAKTHROUGH: Stupak Stops Being STU-PID!
Matt | On 21, Mar 2010
It’s finally happened. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) has announced his support of the healthcare bill that will be voted on tonight.
Stupak was a key holdout on a YES vote until this morning due to the abortion language in the bill. He is a pro-life Democrat who does not want any federal funding to go toward abortions. He was willing to vote against the entire reform effort because of that one clause. So, in a deal once the legislation is passed, President Obama will issue an Executive Order reaffirming the ban on the use of federal funds to be used toward abortions. The original language of the bill already kept the laws current that ban federal money against the procedure. Still, Stupak needed further reassurance about the matter. He got that today from POTUS.
In his press conference with six other Democrats, Stupak announced his support of the bill and his reasoning. He also said that the Democrats are now well past 216 votes needed to pass healthcare reform this evening. Praise the Lord! I can see the steam coming out of the Republicans on the House floor.
