Obama Gets Real With The Today Show
Matt | On 30, Mar 2010
President Obama sat down with Matt Lauer of The Today Show this week for his first interview since the passage of the healthcare legislation early last week.
It was refreshing to actually hear the president RESPOND FULLY to each question that was asked, unlike the Brett Baier debacle from two weeks ago. Matt didn’t exactly go easy on the president, though. He held him to the fire, particularly, about the complete lack of Republican support on the healthcare legislation. Obama responded by saying that the Republican blockade was a purely political move. I couldn’t agree more because there are portions of the bill that Republicans have supported in the past. Obama has promised to continue working with Republicans on future legislation.
Another interesting point in the interview was his discussion of the Tea Party movement. I liked how he characterized them. He said that there is a fringe group WITHIN the movement that thinks he’s a socialist and was not born in the U.S. He’s not going to be able to convince them otherwise. He did say that other members have legitimate concerns that he respects and knows need to be addressed. Basically, all of them aren’t crazies, which is true. It’s good to see him finally address the dying “birther” movement.
Obama also chatted about a range of issues, including other legislative priorities, the Tea Party, yesterday’s Moscow bombings, the Obama family, and the Final Four.
Note: There are about four or five clips to this interview. Shame on the Today Show for not making it one long feed! The clips should play in succession beginning with the one above that talks about the healthcare law.
