President Obama Freezes Federal Workers Pay

| On 30, Nov 2010

Federal workers should think of this sign every time they dream of getting a raise for the next two years. Sad, huh?

Attention all federal workers … You’ve been very bad this year and President Obama has decided to drop a lump of coal in each of your stockings for the next two years.

POTUS took the bold, and so far unpopular, step of enacting a two-year pay freeze on all federal workers. The move is supposed to save $2 billion in FY 2011, $28 billion over five years, and $60 billion over 10 years. That sounds like a lot of money, but in the grand scheme of things it isn’t. For example, we are spending nearly $7 billion PER MONTH on the war in Afghanistan, as of May 2010.

Republicans are happy with the plan, since they initially proposed the idea months ago. Democrats are pissed the hell off. Many federal workers are middle class and fall right into the Dem base. They have historically made less than their private sector counterparts anyway.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand that the president has to make concessions on both sides of the aisle and cut spending in a lot of different areas. But, making the federal government LESS competitive to attract top talent doesn’t really make sense. It also plays right into GOP hands because Democrats have been strongly against the plan.

It’s times like this that I wish the president would put his whole foot down (not just his pinky toe) and starting cutting where it hurts the Republicans! How about these expensive and long-ass wars? Or, what about those tax cuts for the rich? Let’s get rid of the offshore corporate tax shelters that keep billions of dollars out of the U.S. Treasury every year? I don’t see too many proposals to cut from those areas.

If this is a ploy to energize the base, President Obama is on another planet for this one. But, I guess belt-tightening has to be hard for everyone, including the middle class. Uggh…
