Primary Highlight: Meet Kamala Harris, AG Candidate in California

| On 10, Jun 2010

Attention Californians: This could be your next Attorney General! Check her out.

There was some positive news to come out of Tuesday’s primary races in several states.  This next rising star is battling to be California’s next Attorney General.

Meet Kamala Harris. She has been called “the female Barack Obama” by PBS’s Gwen Ifill on The David Letterman Show.  It also doesn’t hurt that she has attended State Dinners at the White House, so the presidential comparison is not that far-fetched.  She’s smart, tough on crime, and is wowing the residents of the Golden State.  She’s even authored a book called, “Smart On Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer” and appeared on Today to promote it.

Harris is currently the District Attorney for San Francisco, already a legal star of sorts in Northern California.  On Tuesday, she beat her Democratic opponent, Chris Kelly, to advance to the main ballot in November.  Harris will face Los Angeles District Attorney, Steve Cooley, in the general election.

The winner will take the helm of California’s top and extremely important legal position. With a budget crisis, energy issues, voter discontent, crime, and most of all illegal immigration – whomever wins will have a lot on their plate!

People are already setting the bar high for Harris.  The words governor, senator, and/or president have been mentioned by others when discussing her future.  That’s some powerful stuff.

As of right now, she’s focused on November.  She’s eager to let the state know about her Back On Track program she implemented in San Francisco. It gives first-time drug offenders an intensive year of support and work toward a crime-free life.  They focus on skills such as parenting, working, and gaining at least a high-school equivalency education.  The program has been successful and is looking toward implementation in other major metro areas.

If Kamala Harris wins the post in November, she’ll be making history just like the president.  She will be the first African-American and first woman to hold the office of attorney general.  Get it Kamala!  lol…
