Today Marks the 25th Anniversary of MLK Day

| On 17, Jan 2011

Though January 15 was his actual birthday, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been 82 years old this year.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day everyone!

Aside from being a national holiday, today is a milestone in U.S. history. The first Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday was celebrated 25 years ago. President Ronald Reagan signed the designation into law in 1983 and it became active in January 1986.

In 1994, Congress designated the holiday as a National Day of Service. The Corporation for National and Community Service was then responsible for carrying out that vision.

As a result, today is a day of service and reflection on the life and great works of Dr. King. He opened so many doors for people of ALL races and ethnic backgrounds to live in a more free and equal society.

We all owe Dr. King a bit of thanks today!
