Gay Hairstylist Refuses to “Wash and Set” NM Gov. Susana Martinez

| On 22, Feb 2012

Here’s a good example of someone standing up for what they believe in.

A gay hairstylist in Santa Fe, New Mexico has gone public with his story of recently refusing to take an appointment for the state’s Gov. Susana Martinez, a Republican.

Antonio Darden, who runs Antonio’s Hair Studio in Santa Fe, says that he will not cut Martinez’s hair as long as she opposes same-sex marriage.

Darden has cut the governor’s hair three times before. Recently, her staff called to book another appointment. They were kindly refused twice based on the position she holds. It looks like he feels strongly about it and decide to protest one of his highest-profile clients.

So, Gov. Martinez is going to have to get her wig washed elsewhere. I hope her next stylist can wean her away from this “Nancy Grace-like” look she has going on. ::side-eye::

Do you think Mr. Darden has taken his stance toward Gov. Martinez and her views too far?

It is his prerogative. It appears he believes more in his vision of equality than those few coins she was bringing in his door. It says a lot when a person is willing to forgo money for beliefs.

This will benefit her as well. A woman's hairstylist is almost as important as a primary care physician. I don't want anyone with ill feelings toward me touching me in such an intimate way. I also don't want to dish my business from the the comfort of the chair of someone who can't stand me. Tension during a hair appointment is no bueno.

I do hope that whoever gets her next shows her a few hairstyle books. That 'do is in need an extreme makeover.
