Let me say what most people are already thinking.
WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON IN THIS PICTURE?
This is a photo of First Lady Michelle Obama on the cover of “Magazine de Fuera de Serie,” a Spanish magazine. The image has been altered by placing Mrs. Obama’s face on the body of a “negress slave” who was featured in French artwork, Portrait d’une négresse, an historic piece painted after French slavery ended.
The altered picture accompanies a Spanish-language article about the first lady and the upcoming election titled, “Michelle Granddaughter of a Slave, Lady of America.”
The person responsible for this depiction wanted to tie Mrs. Obama’s heritage to the present. But, obviously they missed how this may be perceived in the U.S. Featuring the first lady as a slave is not exactly a compliment in our hyper-sensitive media environment.
Let’s not forget that the Internet almost blew a fuse two weeks ago when Vice President Joe Biden said that Mitt Romney “wants to put y’all back in chains…,” in reference to his economic policies.
This depiction of Mrs. Obama is a no-go for me!
