The head of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre, has to be the most hated man in the news cycle these days.
LaPierre called a press conference on Friday to discuss the NRA’s “strategy” of moving forward after the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last week.
What followed was the most bizarre display of misplaced reality that I have seen in quite a while. And I’m someone who follows politics everyday. That’s a heavy statement.
You MUST watch the presser for yourself. In a nutshell, LaPierre calls for armed police at every school in America by January. He blamed the media and video games for this countries violent tendencies. He urged school districts to contact the NRA for gun training for education officials. In no way, shape, or form were gun owners held accountable (except to find solutions) for last week’s tragedy. LaPierre also ignored protesters and took no questions from media in the audience.
It was the perfect combination of The Twilight Zone and Punk’d all wrapped up in one. I was waiting for someone to chime in that it was all a big hoax. But, *sigh*, it was all very real.
Again, you absolutely must watch the press conference. Wayne LaPierre sat quiet for a week after the shootings to come up with this ass-backwards “plan” of action?! This was the epitome of a WTF moment in history.
NBC’s David Gregory will interview LaPierre exclusively on “Meet the Press” on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. ET. I’ll definitely be tuned in for that one. It’s the first time that the NRA chief will take direct questions about his plan and hopefully his thoughts on the Connecticut shooting.
