Mitt Romney’s campaign released a new ad on Monday hitting at President Obama’s changes in requirements for welfare recipients.
There’s one issue, though. The campaign, a former president, and independent fact-checking agencies have all said that Romney’s current and previous welfare ads are false.
Romney claims that as of July 12 of this year, President Obama dropped the work requirement for those receiving welfare. That particular component had been a major success point when President Clinton signed the reform efforts into law in 1996.
What really happened is that the Department of Health and Human Services is now allowed to grant waivers to specific states to release them from the federal welfare work requirements. The states have to show that they are committed to improving the employment outcomes of the people seeking benefits.
And guess which states are seeking the waivers? Those run by REPUBLICAN governors….
