Westboro Baptist Church has probably secured a pretty safe place next to Satan in Hell.
The “house of worship” based in Topeka, Kansas announced over the weekend that they would travel to Newtown, Connecticut to picket the funerals of the 26 killed in Friday’s massacre. These shepherds of the devil will also picket the school itself.
Just so you grasp the WTF of this news …. Twenty-six innocent people were mass-murdered in a school last Friday. This group has flown to Connecticut to protest THEIR funerals and the crime scene. In simple terms, Westboro believes that Friday’s unspeakable crime is a result of God’s judgment.
Per a tweet sent by church spokeswoman, Shirley Phelps-Roper:
“Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.”
Since sending the tweet, Phelps-Roper fell victim to an online hacker who took over her account because of the church’s harsh views toward the fallen in Connecticut. Per Twitter, the handle she was using was suspended as of December 18.
Westboro regularly pickets funerals of gays and soldiers. They do it mostly to attract attention to themselves. According to International Digital Times, the church will usually cease its protests if members of the media speak with them.
It’s a sick and twisted PR strategy that they have executed in the past. But, in this case, emotions are so raw about the Newtown killings and many people deem it in filthy taste to pimp a national tragedy for personal gain.
The response to Westboro’s plans in Connecticut have been heated. In addition to the Twitter hacking, an official petition has been posted on the White House website to recognize Westboro as a “hate group.” People also took to Twitter to post hotel information where Westboro picketers are staying in Connecticut.
Some people will cloak their hatred in Jesus and call it religion. I’m not here for it. The Jesus I know IS the definition of love. Westboro is about a light year away from showing any signs of it.
Do us all a favor and at least sign the White House petition against Westboro Baptist Church.
