Do We Need Pennies In Our Money Supply?

I thought this was an interesting segment from CNN’s “State of the Union with Candy Crowley” this weekend.
In it, she explores the U.S. monetary system briefly and what the penny means in it all. The costs to produce it are about double its value, which doesn’t make a lot of business sense. Even though many people view the penny as worthless because of inflation and price hikes, there’s a good deal of people that are opposed to letting it go.
Could you see life without the penny in our treasury? I had never quite considered it before..
