North Carolina is already a cesspool for what’s wrong with voting rights in America. One of their county GOP officials proved this to be true in front of a national audience on Wednesday night.
Don Yelton, a precinct chairman of the Buncombe County GOP, was interviewed on ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’ for a segment with Aasif Mandvi. In it, he discussed his support for North Carolina’s new restrictive voter ID law they passed at the end of July. The legislation is one of the toughest since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Yelton talked about a few things, including the fact that he’s been called a bigot previously. Here’s what he had to say:
“In my day you didn’t call a black a black. You called them a negro … And now you have a black person using the term “nigger this” and “nigger that” and it’s ok for them to do it.”
He also mentioned how he didn’t care how the voter law affected certain communities, including whites and college students. Here are his thoughts about African-Americans:
“If [the new voting law] hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give ’em everything .. so be it.”
As soon as GOP officials both at the local and state levels saw the clip, they sprang into action. They denounced Yelton’s words and called for his resignation. On Thursday, he stepped down from as post as precinct chairman. Yet after doing that, he said ‘The Daily Show’ didn’t even air the worst parts of the interview. He told the Mountain Xpress, “The comments that were made, that I said, I stand behind them. I believe them.”
You have got to be kidding me….
