Obama Honors 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipients (VIDEO)

On Wednesday, President Obama handed out the Presidential Medal of Freedom awards to some of the biggest names in science, sports, media, politics, civil rights, and other areas. The award is the highest civilian honor that marks, according to Wikipedia“an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

The ceremony was broadcast live from the East Room of the White House. Later in the evening, a dinner was held for the honorees at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Here is the list of 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom honorees:

  • Ernie Banks, former baseball player
  • Ben Bradlee, former newspaper editor
  • Bill Clinton, former U.S. president and philanthropist
  • Daniel Inouye (posthumous), U.S. senator
  • Daniel Kahneman, psychologist and professor
  • Richard Lugar, former U.S. Senator
  • Loretta Lynn, country singer and musician
  • Mario Molina, chemist and environmental scientist
  • Sally Ride (posthumous), astronaut
  • Bayard Rustin (posthumous), civil rights pioneer
  • Arturo Sandoval, jazz musician
  • Dean Smith, college basketball coach
  • Gloria Steinem, women’s rights activist
  • Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian, civil rights pioneer
  • Patricia Wald, former appellate judge
  • Oprah Winfrey, media personality and philanthropist
