Clay Aiken, Former ‘Idol’ Contestant, to Run for Congress

Former ‘American Idol’ runner-up, Clay Aiken, announced this week that he will be running for Congress. He seeks to unseat Rep. Renee Ellmers, a Republican, who currently represents the state’s second district.
Aiken is running as a Democrat, though in the video he makes a reference to working with former President George W. Bush to advocate for people with special needs.
North Carolina’s second district is pretty solidly Republican. Ellmers won in 2012 by a 55-41 percent margin over her opponent. The state of North Carolina voted for Mitt Romney as a whole. Aiken faces an uphill battle in the district that covers rural and exurban areas between Raleigh, Greensboro, and Fayetteville.
Still, the video is pretty touching and seeks to humanize Aiken as someone who relates to the issues of real people. He only vaguely makes a reference to his ‘Idol’ stint — seeking instead to talk about his upbringing and work as a teacher. It’s obvious that he has some seasoned political handlers working with him, per the video’s backdrop and dramatics.
I support Clay in his effort. I know he has a ton of work to do to be viable in the race. Anyone has to be better than Rep. Ellmers, who showed her ass nationally during the government shutdown.
